What is added to milk? | Canadian Goodness (2024)

By DFC - PLC, Communications Team

In Canada, the only ingredients added to milk are vitamin A and D. The addition of vitamin A and D to fluid milk is a legal requirement under Health Canada's Food and Drug Act.

Vitamin A is added to skim and partially skimmed milk (skim, 1% and 2%) in order to replenish what was lost in the cream during the skimming process (because this vitamin stays in the fat). As for vitamin D, it is added to all forms of milk. Vitamin D fortification has been in effect for more than 50 years now and is a public health measure that allowed the elimination of rickets in Canada.
