I don't think I have ever washed lentils and we're all still here I even fed all my babies on red lentils without washing them. After all they are going to be boiled.

There'll be no food poisoning, just maybe a bit of grit. But I never wash lentils and they don't taste gritty.

Thanks for replying to someone clearly hysterical. As it happened, it was so unappetising that she refused it anyway.

Are you supposed to wash lentils before putting them in soup? I never have.
Kbear · 06/12/2009 13:40

Any bacteria would have been killed when you boiled the soup.
Stones and bits of grit are another matter ... !

Honestly? There could be stones in them??
I have never washed them.
Should I put them in the washing machine?
ABetaDad · 06/12/2009 17:11
They usually say in recipes to wash them and spread them out on a tray to pick out any stones.
This is what it says in Wikipedia:
"When lentils are prepared, they are first inspected for damaged lentils, stones and other foreign matter. Then they are rinsed until the water runs through and comes out clear. Some prefer to soak the lentils for an extended time and discard the water. This removes substances that may cause indigestion".
