LARRY E. SALCI GENERAL MANAGER by Joyce Lain careers Kennedy 0 Nurses: becoming rare and revered Dear Joyce: Do you see jobs in nursing improving in salary? T.H., San Antonio, Texas Nurses' pay is inching up. While never a lucrative profession, it's reasonable to expect that they will continue to receive greater financial rewards than was the case in the past because there's a frightful shortage of nurses and society cannot do without them. Moreover, increasing numbers of nurses are continuing their education and receiving a master's degree or doctorate which ups the compensation. A nationwide study by the University of Texas Medical Branch last year pegged hospital staff nurse salaries at between $12,100 to $25,500.

Experienced head nurses were paid between $16,400 and $40,000. Despite efforts by hospital associations to keep the lid on nursing salaries, a Florida hospital recently jumped its recruiting rate to the $30,000 range to the outrage of competitive institutions in its service area. Other institutions are paying bounties ranging from $100 to $1,000 a head to employees who bring in registered nurses. Still others are luring nurses with incentives such as leased cars for night staff, premium pay for weekend duty, day care for children and paid tuition for continuing education. In Washington, D.C., Mary Walsh, a member of the nursing faculty at the Catholic University of America, makes an observation that may be overlooked in the career-choosing process: "Nursing students find a never-ending demand for well prepared professionals.

Unlike some other occupations, nursing can never be phased out because there always will be sick people." Walsh cites five basic qualities nurses need: commitment, serviceoriented values, technical skills, intellectual grasp and the capacity for good interpersonal relations. "Overall," Walsh says, "I believe nursing is a very rewarding profession for those who possess these qualities. We're no longer only the right-hand persons for doctors, but we also have become involved with research and we're able to assume larger measures of responsibility in various health care agencies and in the community." READER SERVICE: To obtain a free copy of the American Nurses Association's publications list, 28 pages, send your postcard request to Joyce Lain Kennedy at this newspaper. The list describes low -cost materials of interest to nurses. Ask for "Nurses Publications." The offer ends Oct.
