Walsh College alumnus helped school develop BY JEAN CALMEN AND JEANNE MAY Free Press Staff Writers Frank L. Gofrank's degree from Walsh Institute helped make him a success as an accountant and entrepreneur. Never forgetting his background, he later became a trustee of the Detroit school, now called Walsh College and located in Troy. "He really helped in the direction of Walsh College in its early years in Troy," said former president Jeffery Barry. "He was a great friend and a phenomenal motivator." Mr.

Gofrank also set up the Frank and Helen Gofrank Foundation to support various charities established a general scholarship at the school. It was first awarded in 1993. "He had great empathy for students not only at Walsh College but in general," said Barry. Mr. Gofrank, former chairman and CEO of Newcor died of cardiovascular disease Saturday in Ft.

Lauderdale, Fla. He was 76 and had homes in Grosse Pointe Farms and Boca Raton, Fla. He was born in Detroit, served in the Army in World War II and earned a degree in accounting at Walsh Institute. "He helped to put us on the map," said former Newcor executive Simon Fisher. During Mr. Gofrank's association with the company, its annual business grew from $10 million to $100 million. "A lot of that was due to him constantly prodding us for growth, acquisitions and so forth that he engineered," Fisher said. Mr.

Gofrank was a board member of Comerica Bank and Boca Raton Community Hospital and was a founder of the Boca Raton Academy, where a hall is named for him. In Michigan, he was president of Kiwanis Club No. 1 and was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Grosse Pointe Shores. Survivors include two daughters, son, Ron; three brother. OBITUARIES SUE ABBOTT, 62, who operated a floral decorating business for many years, died of complications from diabetes Wednesday while vacationing in Naples, Fla. The former Sue Dennis of Grosse Pointe used her skills in flower arrangement to run the Silk Petal from her home beginning in the early 1970s. She was born in Joliet, and was a graduate of Illinois State University. She taught elementary school in Lockport, and later taught nursery school in Detroit from 1966 to 1981. She was a member of the Windmill Pointe Sue Garden Club and Abbott Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.

Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Richard; daughters Pamela Marek and Deborah Mucci; mother, Isabelle Dennis, and a brother. A service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church, 17150 Maumee, Grosse Pointe. THE REV. JOSEPH M.

GERRARD, 91, who was active in church, civic and business affairs in Milford for many years, died Sunday at Huron Valley Hospital in Commerce Township after a heart attack. He was among the founding members of St. George Episcopal Church in Milford in 1946 and in 1969 was ordained a permanent deacon in the Episcopal Church, serving at St. George and St. John's in Holly, He also served as chaplain of West Hickory Haven Nursing Home and Pontiac General Hospital.

Mr. Gerrard, a Milford resident since 1940, also owned several businesses including Gerrard Ice Cream, Milford Car Wash and Culligan Water Service. He was on the Milford Village Council and was village president in the late 1950s. He also served as business manager for Huron Valley Schools, was a member of the Huron Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, was a past president of the Milford Rotary Club and a life member of Milford Lodge No. 165 and Shriners.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Winifred; daughters Valerie Motley, Anita Sisson and Nancy Gerrard; a foster daughter, Helgard Meyer-Pittoff, and four grandchildren. Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. today and the funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. George Episcopal Church, 801 E.

Commerce, Milford. EARL THOMAS HUCKLE, 84, former editor and publisher of the Cadillac Evening News, died of cancer Saturday in Cadillac. He became publisher of the newspaper in 1942, succeeding his father, Thomas Oliver Huckle, who had purchased the paper in 1926. In 1969, Huckle's son took over.
