If you teach touch typing for kids, you've probably seen or used Dance Mat Typing from the BBC – it's been around for 20 years and is one of the longest serving touch typing programs. It's still a great free resource, giving an introduction to the idea of touch typing.

Dance Mat Typing is a free online game that teaches kids to touch-type using the home-row method. Students progress through 12 stages within four levels (three stages per level) that slowly build the number of keys they're expected to master.

What does 60 WPM mean? ›

For high school students, a speed of 20 WPM is low. Take a typing course and your typing speed will increase. 20 words per minute it's not good for adults because it is significantly below the average typing speed of 41 words per minute and does not provide enough time for efficient and accurate typing.
