1 Do your homework
Before the interview, spend some time browsing the company's website, social media, blog, news, and reviews. Look for information that relates to the position you applied for, the company's mission, vision, values, culture, goals, achievements, challenges, and competitors. Make notes of the facts, figures, and stories that stand out to you and align with your own skills, experience, and aspirations.

This is key. Find specific conversation points regarding the company by searching the news, social platforms including the ones of the leadership team of the company. Come prepared with smart questions to ask when given the chance. Do not pretend to know everything about the company so make your questions legitimate and focus on showing interest in the company.

2 Be specific and relevant
When answering the question, don't just recite what you read online. Instead, pick two or three key points that demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the company and its industry. Explain why those points are important to you and how they connect to the role you want. For example, you could mention a recent product launch, a social impact initiative, a market trend, or a customer feedback that impressed you and how you would contribute to or benefit from it.

3 Show enthusiasm and curiosity
Your answer should not only convey your knowledge, but also your interest and excitement for working at the company. Use positive and expressive language, smile, and maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Avoid sounding bored, generic, or arrogant. At the end of your answer, you can also ask a follow-up question that shows your curiosity and eagerness to learn more about the company or the role. For example, you could ask about the company's plans, priorities, expectations, or culture.

The art of interacting face-to-face got a little sidetracked by our addiction to screens. Also Covid didn’t help.You may want to practice a bit of acting to help your body language and tone of voice. The oft-quoted statistic is that the interviewer will only absorb about 30 percent of their impression from your words. The rest is everything else. Body language includes posture, tone of voice, eye contact, gestures, mirroring and the energy you get across. Have a great interview!

4 Practice and refine
Before the interview, practice your answer with a friend, a family member, or a personal coach. Ask for feedback on your content, delivery, and tone. Make sure your answer is clear, concise, and confident. Avoid rambling, repeating, or contradicting yourself. Aim for a duration of one to two minutes.
