Rockin’ Roosevelt concert to raise funds for Arnold park

New Ken/Arnold Social in the Park will sponsor the annual Rockin’ Roosevelt benefit concert from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Roosevelt Park in Arnold. Gates at Rankin and Drey streets will open at 11:30 a.m.

Admission is $5. Bands scheduled to appear include Johnson’s Crossing, Magic & the Hot Metal Brass Band, Sunday Complex, Miss Freddye’s Blues Band, Big House Pete, Elias Khouri, the Shiners, Curtis & the Shakerz, Missing Link, Dimwit and Voices of Satin Whip.

There will be food vendors and a 50/50 raffle. Admission is $5 per person. Rain or shine. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Proceeds will be used for improvements in Roosevelt Park. Visit New Ken Arnold Social in the Park on Facebook for band set times.

Pittsburgh Opera to open concert series at Hartwood Acres

The Pittsburgh Opera will kick off the free 2024 Summer Concert series Sunday at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater, 4070 Middle Road, Hampton.

Gates open at 3 p.m. Black Dog Winery and Hop Farm Brewing trucks will be on site beginning at 6 p.m. and performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Bring a chair. Popup tents and umbrellas are permitted but must be taken down before the performance begins. Dogs are permitted but must be on a leash at all times and be up to date on all vaccinations and licensing. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

Summer reading program planned at People Library

Peoples Library will offer a summer reading program for children 12 and younger June 8 through Aug. 10 at the New Kensington and Lower Burrell libraries.

The Quack a Doodle Doo Petting Zoo will be on hand at noon June 8 to open the event. There will be special programs, weekly story times, STEM activities, arts and crafts programs and construction crew activities.

Children should stop in at the library and pick a reading log at either the New Kensington or Lower Burrell libraries to earn a chance to win a prize. Logs must be returned by Aug. 17.

June 12: St. James and Our Lady, Queen of Peace parishes will sponsor a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh. The bus will leave at 9 a.m. from the St. James parking lot, 109 Owens View Drive. Avonmore

Sunday: First Presbyterian Church of Avonmore, 518 Indiana Ave., will host a Blessing of the Animals service from 6 to 8 p.m. June 2 on the church lawn. Little Blessings Petting Zoo will bring some farm animals and refreshments will be served. Donations of newspapers, pet food, toys, and cash will be accepted for Action for Animals Humane Society in Latrobe. Pets must be leashed or in a carrier.

Cheswick

Sunday: The annual Strawberry Festival will be from 3 to 7 p.m. along Spruce Street between North Highland and Hill avenues. There will be food, a DJ, family entertainment, craft vendors and strawberry shortcake. Details: recboard@cheswick.us.

East Vandergrift

Sunday: Our Lady, Queen of Peace Parish will have bingo at 6:30 p.m. in the church social hall, 411 McKinley Ave. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. There will be a 54-number jackpot game, a 41-number picture frame game and a magic number game. Details: 724-478-4958.

Freeport

June 7: The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania will sponsor a free community walk Freeport Community Park. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and will last one hour, rain or shine. Meet in the parking lot of Laube Hall. A naturalist will lead the group and will discuss birds, beneficial insects, native plants and wildlife. Binoculars will be available. Reservations required. Harrison

Today: Natrona Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars will have bingo at 7 p.m. at the post, 894 Veterans Lane. Doors open at 6 p.m., and there will be specials, a 50-50 raffle and final game jackpot.

Ongoing: Leechburg Area Museum and Historical Society is selling 2025 commemorative calendars. Each month displays a differed old photograph with an overlay of a more recent picture. Lower Burrell

Today: The Adult Day Care Mobile Veterans Program will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 1601 Wildlife Lodge Road. There will be coffee and conversation, Gerofit exercise, games, lunch and crafts. Sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs, all veterans are welcome.

Today: Washington Township Volunteer Fire Company will have bingo at 7 p.m. at the firehall, 4078 Route 66. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and sales start at 6 p.m. Free coffee. The kitchen will be open. Players must be at least 18 or accompanied by an adult.

Saturday: A car cruise will be from 2 to 6 p.m. at Union Presbyterian Church, 656 Route 380. There will be music, food, a basket raffle, bake sale and 50-50.
