“Since we opened our east London salon, we’ve noticed a real interest in shaggier hairstyles that have a lot of movement, but which don’t feel too labored over,” says George Northwood. “It’s a cut with less of a baseline, and less of a sharper shape, but it’s really chopped into and worn messily.” Longer at the back and shorter at the front, it is effortless summer hair that’s also super easy to maintain. Win-win.

“The short, choppy elfin cut is fresh and youthful and can be worn in a variety of ways,” says Paul Edmonds. “You can play around with the front of the hair to achieve different looks, plus it’s really easy to look after.” Look to Emma Corrin and Florence Pugh for great examples of the style.

“It’s all about creating shape around the face this summer,” explains Anita Rice, founder of Buller and Rice. “Think soft and wispy, natural and textured fringes, and layering.” Hair like this is also brilliant for throwing up into a quick and easy top knot, whilst still maintaining shape at the front.

“I am seeing a real resurgence of what I call the ‘naked bob’,” says DJ Quintero, Living Proof celebrity and styling ambassador. “Those with a lob or who have been wanting to cut their hair for a while are finally making the chop. It’s chic, glossy, and totally no-fuss.” It suits anyone, especially those with finer hair, who want to achieve more volume and texture. “Ask for it to be cut blunt, with layers kept to a minimum—it is the definition of quiet luxury.”

“The shixie combines the texture of the shag or wolf cut, with a grown-out pixie,” says Neil Moodie. “It features a razored ’70s-style fringe. If you’re growing out a pixie or want to go shorter and still maintain some length and playfulness, this is the style for you.” Especially good on those with naturally wavy or curly hair, it can be adjusted to elongate or balance face shape, depending on what works best for you.

“We’ve always been really inspired by looks from the past, and try to put our own modern spin on them—recently we’ve noticed clients with longer, softer fringes are opting for strong, wide and short fringes: the short ’60s fringe,” say Nick Latham and Sean Paul Nother, also known as The Hair Bros. “Think Anna Karina, but more modern and less styled.” Cut to reveal more of the eyebrows and open up the cheekbones, this kind of fringe works just as well when hair is left down as when it is worn up. “It’s a strong look but still feels effortless, plus the great thing is that it will grow into a soft, Jane Birkin-style fringe.”

“I’ve been thinking a lot about Tom Ford’s ’90s Gucci advert hair,” says Luke Hersheson. “So feathered, face-framing cuts. I think embracing natural textures makes everything feel much more modern, and this cut lends itself to that.”
