These days Ibiza is renowned as much for its culinary prowess as it is for its clubbing scene, and rightly so. In recent years, a slew of world-class restaurants have popped up across the island, adding a much-needed dose of diversity to its culinary landscape. That’s great news for foodies, but purists needn’t be concerned — there are still plenty of toes-in-the-sand gems and rustic, countryside treasures to keep everyone happy. Presuming you can tear yourself away from the dancefloor for long enough to pick up a fork, of course.

Helmed by three former Noma alumni who threw off the shackles of a Michelin-star kitchen in favour of a laid-back life by the sea, Nudo is a pared back chiringuito with an easygoing, daily changing menu that’s peppered with a few firm favourites like fried fish taco and boiled red shrimps with homemade kimchi. Locals flock with their kids in tow for the bountiful bowls of homemade pasta, everyone else comes for the sea views and low-key foodie credentials. Sharing plates are best enjoyed with an ice-cold glass of natural wine or their spine-tinglingly good home-brewed kombucha.

A speakeasy-inspired sushi experience on the back streets of Ibiza town may sound like a simple concept but Sushi by Walt goes beyond, as a recently appointed Michelin star attests. Shrouded behind a secretive black curtain and seating only eight diners at one time, the quiet, intimate setting contributes to the feeling of exclusivity. Using the best available catch of the day (some of which is sourced specifically for the restaurant), Walt carefully prepares each plate omakase-style, so that guests can witness every precision cut and placement. Despite humble appearances, dinner here is akin to watching a true master at work.

Special occasion dinners don’t come much more exceptional than at Sa Capella, an old favourite that’s recently undergone a swish new makeover, bohemian heritage in tact. Housed within a cavernous, 16th century chapel among the hills surrounding San Antonio, the candlelit courtyard and dimly-lit, dramatic dining room are both dripping in romance. The menu features lots of local Ibizan produce and the best of land and sea cooked on a wood-fired grill in an open kitchen. Once a favourite haunt of famous epicureans Freddie Mercury and King Juan Carlos I, these days it’s superstar DJs who can’t keep away.

Perhaps you think that tomato tartare isn’t your thing but hold that thought until after a visit to Casa Linda, where the dish, made using tasty local produce, is their house speciality. Equal parts surprising and satisfying, it sets the bar for a meal you don’t forget in a hurry, especially when paired with the alfresco terrace setting. The restaurant is the first project outside Barcelona for Tomás Abellán, the brains behind the city’s beloved Casa Luz and Bar Alegría, making it well worth a detour into the pine-stacked hills of San José.

Adored by the free-spirited bobos who bounce around the globe chasing the sun, El Chiringuito Es Cavallet is one of the island’s most famous restaurants, with a menu that simply begs to be devoured. By day, dine on the salt-kissed sun loungers sandwiched by sand dunes on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other. By night, head indoors to see the venue transformed by moonlight, candles, and unashamed romanticism. The seared tuna and the Black Angus fillet mignon cooked on the bespoke wood-fired grill are mouth-watering must-tries.

Located in the centre of Santa Gertrudis, widely regarded as Ibiza’s culinary capital, Finca La Plaza lies a stone’s throw from the village’s centuries-old church and the bustling main square. But stepping through its gates is akin to discovering your own secret garden. Ambient music plays, bulbs are strung between palm trees, and an air of Balearic magic hangs in the air. Dining is a sensory experience and nowhere can send the eyes, ears and tastebuds into overdrive quite like Los Enamorados. With a seaside location in Portinatx, Ibiza’s northernmost beach, the alfresco restaurant here is really something else. Arrive at sunset to see the sky blush pale pink, and order co*cktails before tucking into dishes including burrata salad, slow-cooked octopus, baked cauliflower and the much-loved gambas taco. The atmosphere is upbeat and the tunes are soul and funk-inspired; you can’t hear a kick drum for miles.

A laid-back spot near the village of San Lorenzo, deep within Ibiza’s countryside, La Paloma’s charm lies in its simple, home-cooked style food that’s made using the very best organic ingredients and served beneath the shade of trees and blossoming flora. Sourced locally where possible, the menu changes weekly according to seasonality and availability. But the mixed salad, made with fresh veggies from the garden, daily baked bread, and two types of pasta are always available. Come for lunch and be sure to linger, this is rustic, authentic Ibiza at its best.

A lively, low-cost locale set among one of Ibiza town’s busy squares, Chidas started out as a small scale cantina but quickly grew into a full scale restaurant. Loved by locals, it’s low-fuss but high impact Mexican food that pairs tasty tacos with tequila and bulging burritos with mezcal and other agave spirits. Bustling from day to night, it’s a casual place where the dishes, drinks and tunes do the talking. That means that as well as being the best Mexican restaurant on the island, it’s also bundles of fun.

Set in the San Antonio countryside, Pikes is a boutique hotel famed for its hedonistic leanings and an eccentric setting that could jump straight from the pages of a Hunter S. Thompson tale. It’s also renowned for its flagship restaurant, Pamelas, which serves wildly satisfying Sunday roasts with all the trimmings (and tastes best accompanied by a Bloody Mary, a side of mischievous company, and an ambient soundtrack) in hot pink surroundings.The Love Food Ibiza brunch/lunch has become a daily favourite, don’t leave the island till you’ve tried Tess Prince’s epic Lebanese chicken shawarma.

A barefoot hangout located on the shores of Cala Molí on Ibiza’s west coast, El Silencio is the kind of beach club that leaps from the pages of a design magazine, with fringed parasols, bamboo shading and billowing seagrass lampshades. It’s a welcome antidote to the island’s usual preened glamour, channelling instead the free spirit of the seventies.Three-Michelin starred chef Mauro Colagreco showcases food cooked by the flame, and pretty-as-a-picture plates like sea bream tiradito and hamachi sashimi. It all leaves you feeling energised rather than depleted, a rarity indeed.

Housed within the Ibiza Gran hotel in Marina Botafoch, La Gaia was recently awarded its first Michelin Star. It was a long time coming for chef Óscar Molina, whose creative skill and exceptional eye for detail was already island-renowned. Choose from two (very reasonably priced) tasting menus, the 10-course Tanit or 14-course Posidonia, and relish a carousel of plates that are as pretty as they are delectable. Fine dining on Ibiza isn’t as common as you might think, so this is a great option for a special occasion, especially when combined with the personalised wine pairing.

A family-run affair with over two decades of history, La Escollera is a locals' favourite on the windy shores of Es Cavallet. The most famous dish is Yaya’s (the Catalan word for granny) paella, which was the first thing on the menu when the restaurant initially opened its doors, and remains a bestseller to this day. Another classic is the salt-baked sea bass, which is coated in a crust using the produce collected from the nearby salt flats. A seafood restaurant that makes you feel like part of the family, such laid-back charm is to be cherished on Ibiza.
