Saturday Kitchen fans ready to 'switch off' as they slam 'obnoxious' guest (2024)

Matt Tebbutt returned to BBC One with another instalment of Saturday Kitchen. Sadly, viewers were distracted from his work by singer Lulu, who wreaked havoc throughout the program.

Lulu was one of the latest guests on Matt Tebbutt's Saturday Kitchen but viewers weren't happy to see her.

The Scottish Singer, 75, appeared on the program alongside Georgina Hayden, Jason Atherton, Genevieve Taylor and Olly Smith this Saturday morning (June 22, 2024) but her enthusiasm left many TV cookery fans livid. Taking to X, otherwise known as Twitter, many of them slammed the Shout hitmaker as she made multiple references to her age and repeated that her grandchildren, Teddy and Bella, keep her young.

To make matters worse, viewers saw red when she criticised chef and presenter Matt for his seasoning and randomly broke out into song. Fans saw their patience was wearing thin throughout the show as one of them notably penned: "Jesus wept. Lulu is THE most insufferable annoying person to watch ever. @SaturdayKitchen."

Another added: "Didn’t enjoy the program at all today. Lulu was OTT and tried to dominate everything. Shame she was on during her 12 hrs when she doesn’t talk." A third exasperated TV fan echoed: "An hour and a half of Lulu … lost the will to live." A fourth social media user chimed in: "Wish Lulu didn't speak at all today", while a fifth jumped in to agree: "I have a sneaky feeling Lulu likes the sound of her own voice."

One watcher commented: "Lulu is responsible for the most cringey Saturday morning I've had for quite some time. SHE'S 75 YOU KNOW, AND IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC." Another penned: "I thought Lulu on Saturday kitchen was very loud and obnoxious and why did she feel the need to keep mentioning her age?", while one watcher quipped, in reference to Lulu taking care of her voice, her main instrument, by making the decision to "not speak before 12": "So Lulu is only irritating after midday when she's touring.."

But among the many disappointed viewers, one handful of fans took a stand for Lulu, shutting down all the criticism on her behalf. "Yes, she was a little OTT but wouldn’t you like a night with her, and listen to all the stories she could tell you", one viewer notably argued. Another echoed: "Just came on X to see how many people were slagging Lulu off on #SaturdayKitchen . Why is it? Yes, she's a bit full on, but she's lively, enthusiastic AND A HAPPY PERSON and I think she's lovely. Jealousy?"

Lulu embarked on the Champagne for Lulu tour in April 2024, the last of her career as she revealed the experience was "gruelling." Speaking to Gyles Brandreth on the Rosebud podcast, she said: "This is actually - I’m announcing it for the first time now - this is my farewell tour, with family, and friends."

"Because last year I did a tour that was kind of gruelling - it was successful, it went well - but you need an army to be a success in your career these days. And I felt unsupported. But then I turned 75, and I thought, 'You know what, I want to carry on working, but I want to do it a different way’."

The singer has also taken care of her health after her parents passed away. Lulu's mother lost her battle to cancer at the age of 68 while her father passed away from high cholesterol, which was enough for her to keep an eye on her own intake. "My GP told me that I had raised cholesterol. That really frightened me, as it's one of the biggest risk factors for coronary heart disease", she told The Daily Star. "My father's death - at the age of 71 - was terrible. I loved him dearly. He had worked in the meat market in Glasgow for years and was a great singer. Unfortunately, he didn't really take care of his body and he'd had plenty of health warnings that he ignored."

She concluded: "So even though I've always tried to look after myself, when I discovered that I had raised cholesterol, memories of my dad's illness spurred me on and I made sure that I did something about it."
