Introduction Paragraph

This will be the first paragraph of the paper. It includes:

  • Lead/Hook: Get your audience’s attention.
  • Source(s): Introduce the source(s) you will discuss in your essay. Be sure to provide the title and author, as well as any context you deem important to your purpose (publication venue, time, etc.).
  • Purpose/Thesis: Clearly state YOUR purpose/thesis/claim/argument.

Body Paragraphs

  • The body of your essay will be made up of multiple paragraphs after the introduction.
  • A body/core paragraph has one main idea.

Each paragraph in your body/core should be structured like a "hamburger:"

  • "Top Bun" First sentence: Set-up for the paragraph
    • What is the main idea of this paragraph? Sometimes it can be helpful to write this sentence last.
  • Topic Sentence: A sentence (or two) that connects your paragraph to your purpose.
  • "Protein:" ONE Quotation
  • "Bottom Bun" Last sentence: Interpretation of the quotation
    • Summarize the quote in your own words.
    • Describe how that quotation develops your paragraph’s topic and your purpose.

Conclusion/"So what?"

  • The last paragraph of the paper quickly restates your topic and why it is important.
  • You will want to restate your purpose/thesis and reiterate why readers should align with your point of view.
  • The end of the paragraph might call the reader to action or overview future
    research possibilities.
