PACKING IN THE PROTEIN WITH WHEY (2024)

PACKING IN THE PROTEIN WITH WHEY (1)

You may notice that some of our products are “Protein-Packed,” boasting a boost of protein in every bite which helps keep you fuller, longer. While some of our product pack in the protein with wheat or pea protein, others like Power Cakes, Power Waffles, and Power Flapjacks get that extra bump from whey.

WHY DO WE CHOOSE WHEY?

Whey is one of two proteins that come from cow’s milk. Most of us are familiar with whey protein powder, which is simply a liquid whey that is dried into a powder that is then used in shakes, smoothies, or in our Flapjack & Waffle mix to add more protein.

Just like all animal-based proteins, whey protein is considered a complete protein. This means whey contains all nine essential amino acids that our bodies need to survive and function properly. In fact, there are two types of amino acids: non-essential and essential amino acids. Our bodies manufacture non-essential amino acids on their own, so we don’t have to use food or supplements to get enough of them. However, our bodies can’t manufacture essential amino acids on their own which makes it important that we consume them in our diet. This is one reason why whey protein is a great source of added protein because it contains all nine essential amino-acids in adequate proportions.

Generally, about 20 grams of protein is recommended after exercise to maximize recovery and build muscle. But, it should be noted that, it does matter where your protein comes from. Some people prefer whey protein to other added protein becausestudiesshow that whey protein better supports muscle growth and our bodies’ ability to maintain that muscle. Adding whey protein to ourPower Cakeshelps us pack in 14 grams of protein per serving. Better yet, you can even get 21 grams of protein out of your next stack of flapjacks by making our Power Cakes using milk and adding an egg!

WHAT ABOUT PLANT PROTEIN?

At Kodiak Cakes, decisions about which protein to use comes down to a number of things, like taste and texture, and we refrain from saying that one is better for you than another. If you follow a vegan diet, have any allergies to milk, or are lactose intolerant, plant-based protein is a great option and we’d suggest trying our Classic Plant-Based Flapjack & Waffle Mix.
