2015 marks the year of the bands’ 20th anniversary and the group are set to take off on their (set-to-sell-out) reunion UK tour, spanning two weeks. Of which, this 7” record shall be made available to fans. These never-before released demo tracks from one of Britpops’ most popular bands are brought to you exclusively through Acid Jazz Records on 7” vinyl, finished with The Bluetones Reunion Tour 2015 inspired artwork. The bands’ biggest single Slight Return is the opening track for this double-A side. The track went to #2 in the UK charts and is a firm favourite with Bluetones fans and at Mark Morriss live shows. Now, 20 years after its initial release fans can hear the “demo” version of their favourite track. Backed with “No.11” (aka Bluetonic) which was the bands’ first ever single, which was released back in 1995. Slight Return / No. 11 will be available to purchase on the bands’ tour and will be easily recognizable as it uses the same artwork as the bands’ tour poster. We wanted to create a real connection between the tour and this release. 'Straight Lines,' is the first single taken from the forthcoming album Why Choose. Formed in East London in 2012, Shopping forge an itchy, angular explosion of propulsive bass lines, primitive drums and guitar lines sharp as broken glass. Having done time in a plethora of UK DIY bands including Trash Kit and Wet Dog, they draw from a well of late '70s / early-'80s post-punk, bringing to mind the jagged aggression of Gang of Four, the pure, raw yelp of The Slits and the dance-inducing thrust of Delta 5, The Au Pairs and ESG. The band released their debut album 'Consumer Complaints' in November 2103, and personally hawked around UK indie stores (where it quickly sold out of its 1,000 pressing). The LP drew a flurry of press, seeing them dubbed a “band you need to hear” by NME and “Artist To Watch” by SPIN. Pitchfork wrote that "the fragmented shout-it-out hooks, pin-prick guitar lines and ramshackle rhythms... sound like they were captured live off the floor in the BBC's Maida Vale studios sometime in 1981," noting that “they never sound particularly dated or like a carbon-copy, a testament to the group's song writing abilities.” Rather, Shopping embody the spirit of experimentation, social upheaval, (without becoming didactic) clashing gender politics and ethical change that defined their 70’s counterparts and still ring true today. Delia Derbyshire's work at the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop in the 60's was recognised initially for her realisation of the now iconic Doctor Who Theme which was written for the show by Ron Grainer. More recently though, she has been celebrated for her own compositions and experiments at what was then the cutting edge of electronic music. Here on 7" vinyl for the first time are two of her pieces, one written for a TV documentary in 1967, 'Blue Veils and Golden Sands', in which she used her own voice and a handy green BBC lampshade: "I analysed the sound into all of its partials and frequencies, and took the 12 strongest, and reconstructed the sound on the workshop's famous 12 oscillators to give a whooshing sound. So the camels rode off into the sunset with my voice in their hooves and a green lampshade on their backs." On the A-side is 'The Delian Mode', which was used as incidental music during The Sky At Night in 1969, finding critical acclaim in Gramophone Magazine's review of the album BBC RADIOPHONIC MUSIC (often known as 'The Pink Album'), in September of the same year: "Structures, Pot au Feu and Tomorrow's World are about equally good, yet 'Blue Veils' and 'Delian Mode' are probably the finest music here. It may be no accident that the latter is reminiscent of the beginning of Xenakis's OrientOccident for Delia Derbyshire follows the analytical approach of the more sustained electronic compositions. If her best pieces seem the most imaginative here - and they are - it is because she more fully explores the implications of her material." The second single (or third if you count the limited Record Store Day release) from Courtney's "Sometimes I Sit And Think...." album, which is gonna be up there in the Piccadilly albums of the year I've no doubt. This limited edition 7" includes an etched B-side. The new band from Al Monte from Total Control, UV Race, Dick Diver etc. White Vinyl, 500 Only For The World. Terry is getting ready, combing his hair, buttoning his jacket, turning the key in the door. “I’m doing fine” sings Terry out loud, he knows. Divide him into four and you get Al Montfort (UV Race, Total Control, Dick Diver etc.), Amy Hill (Constant Mongrel, School Of Radiant Living), Xanthe Waite (Mick Harvey Band) and Zephyr Pavey (Eastlink, Total Control, Russell Street Bombings). Inevitably, Terry likes to make a noise. Drums, guitars and all his voices come into play, making a solid raft for Terry’s melancholic musings to navigate the languid rapids. This all unravels at its own pace, conducting a conversation with the commonplace. ‘Talk About Terry’ marks the band’s first venture into the recorded domain collecting together three of the greatest misshapen glam pop tunes Melbourne, Australia has to offer. Let’s sit up at the table. Let’s start the dialogue now, as Terry is well on his way. Edinburgh based Man of Moon have been one of Scotland’s best kept secrets for the last 6 months or so, but with nothing committed to tape that secret has been kept to the swelling numbers who have witnessed the duo's incredibly immersive live show. That's all about to change though with the release of their debut single and double a side 'The Road / This World' . Formed in college, the 19 year-old duo of Michael Reid and Chris Bainbridge have discovered an alchemy almost by accident, flung together for a class recording session but soon realising they were on to something special, they both almost immediately decided to quit college. Wisely choosing instead to spend their time honing a lock-tight intensity that festers at the pit of their psychedelic tinged spatial post-punk. Subsequently Man of Moon have found fans in The Phantom Band, who became such big fans that they took them on tour; ditto The Twilight Sad. Frightened Rabbit’s Andy Monaghan liked them so much, that his production credit lies on their stunning debut 7”. “Since Chris was a kid his dad was on a lot of medication and would say things that inspired Chris’s lyrics massively,” explains Reid of the duo’s name. “He would describe the visions he was seeing and frequently they’d come across as other worldly. Chris saw his Dad as a sort of ‘Man of Moon’.” The impact of these darkly psychedelic trappings, as well as the ebb and flow of the sea that the coastal-dwelling Bainbridge takes huge influence from manifests itself on the unerring motoric groove and shimmering rising peaks of A side The Road. A song about Chris’s sisters attempts to break free from struggles with anxiety, it places a foot in the UK neo-psychedelic revival, sure, but feels more a struggle for escapism rather than a wallowing immersion into the hypnotic repetition that underpins it. That struggle feels almost won on This World; yet Man of Moon will never, you suspect, admit victory, a doubt always lingering underneath. A stripped back but oddly full sounding anti-ballad, Chris’s vocals are compressed and nervy amidst a contrastingly opiate expanse. It’s here where the pair’s stated love of bands like Mogwai, Can, Russian Circles as well as cinematic film scores comes to the fore, as they similarly explore and probe both the range and nuances of their dynamic spectrum. Taken by itself it’s a grippingly uneasy five minutes, coupled with its A-side it makes for one of the most devastating opening statements by a new British band in recent times. 7” limited edition only clear vinyl with party popper pressed inside – each one unique. “Majestic, loveable, challenging and outright brilliant…” Drowned in Sound. Music of Exhaustion / Home At Last is the new 7” double A-side single from eclectic Bedford band The Grubby Mitts on Lost Toys Records. Home At Last is wonky chocolate-box-pop, with touch of Eels or Robert Wyatt; the only verse-chorus-verse-chorus track the band have released so far it is all foot-tapping and whistling, but with a dark core centred around the line, “baby you said your love was like a whole (hole?), well I dug it…”. Music of Exhaustion builds up around a single, overlapping lyrical refrain sung by all five band members, “Once upon a time there was a story that began”. As the line loops the strings, piano, samples, drums and distorted guitar build around it, becoming more and more moving as the band tries to squeeze out every last drop of emotion from the circular refrain. The texture shares common ground with some of Mogwai’s singles and the track has already opened Tom Ravenscroft’s Recommended show on BBC Music. This is the fourth single from the Grubby Mitts epic 18 track debut album, which Drowned in Sound described as “majestic, loveable, challenging and outright brilliant… an outlandish exercise in sonic, thematic world building unlike anything else released thus far this year. In fact that may be an understatement; it’s hard to recall a record of such delicious complexity that was simultaneously able to offer up anthems alongside the avant-garde in such a convincing, moving fashion… The ambition alone is admirable, but the fact that they largely achieve these aims is truly remarkable." "The next train will be leaving from platform one..." This exclusive VP Records / Greensleeves / Dub Store Records 7" release is a double A-sider by Clint Eastwood & General Saint. The A-side features one of the most popular 80s dancehall anthems and one of the duo's biggest hits, 'Stop That Train' ("hey Mr Postman, bring back my woman"), and AA-side features another smasher 'Monkey Man', both from 1983! The fine folks at Moton, that'll be Diesel and Jarvis, hook us up with something a little special this summer, slimming their usual 12" format down into superb coloured 7"s of edit delights. A-side cut "Sister To Sister" does its thang with plenty of soul and sass, blowing our minds with far out funk, and full on frequencies. Last but not least, Diesel and Jarvis go beachcombing with the blue eyed boogie of "We Are The Sunset", a jazzed out, funked up cut ripe for early hours or end of night play. Japanese reggae revive imprint Dub Store Records issue a series of 45s on Wailers bass player Aston 'Family Man' Barrett's Fam's imprint. 'We're Gonna Make It' is a sublime roots cut from Jimmy Riley backed by the Wailers band. In the 60 rocksteady era Riley sang with a vocal group called the Uniques. Back then, Family Man was playing as a part of the infamous session band, the Hippy Boys in the heart of Kingston. The first ever recording of those two goes way back to 1968, so it must have been quite a reunion in this studio session. This piece was recorded around about the same time as Barret's killer 'Cobra Style', and features a similar, albeit much slower, sound. Family Man puts the horns centre stage for the 'Dub Maker' on the flipside. Angie Stone entered the music business as Angie B in the late seventies forming the first female rap group The Sequence, and signing to Sylvia Robinson's Sugarhill label alongside The Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and Funky Four Plus One, whose member Lil' Rodney (Stone) she went on to marry. However, it's her work with Clive Davis' J Records in the late nineties, and specifically 'Wish I Didn't Miss You' that Angie Stone is best known for. Built around a sample of the O'Jay's 1972 iconic hit 'Backstabbers', the track brought a retro soul sound into the R&B-donimated early 00s. This 45 also includes a Hex Hector house mix, but it's the OG you need this 7" for - a sublime soul anthem! Hot on the heels of their top ten debut album release “Are You Satisfied?” and winning the ‘Spirit of Punk’ award at this year’s Kerrang! Awards, Slaves release ‘Sockets’, a high octane love song. Telling the story of a young man helpless at the sight of a beautiful girl, and the girl herself, bored by salivating male attention, Sockets is a three minute sonic assault full off frenetic energy and fast guitars. Already a firm live favourite, Sockets is an alternative Saturday night anthem ! The 7” comes with brand new track, In Dog Years You’re Dead. Split release by 2 of our very favorite artists, Parquet Courts & Joey Pizza Slice. Each one has long admired the other's catalog through various incarnations & releases. Now they get a chance to cover one another's songs. Joey Pizza Slice gives tribute to the angular churn of Parquay Court's "Picture of Health", while Parquay Courts turn Joey's synth pop masterpiece "Pretty Girls" into the perfect summer jam that will get you stoked about cloudy days & being ignored all the time - it's just a matter of perspective after all! In 2014, Get On Down released the For The People Pt. 1 box set, which featured a selection of heavy funk 45s from James Brown's 1970s imprint People Records, as a celebration of the label and its' most famous singles. Now we're proud to present the five singles available for individual sale, lovingly re-created with visuals taken from the original artwork! Lyn Collins had a reputation as one of the strongest hit-makers to come out of People Records, and her R&B smash "Think (About It)" is one of the most enduring to come from James Brown's label. Famed equally for Collins' powerhouse vocals as its frequent sampling in hip-hop and dance tracks, (most prominently the Rob Base & DJ EZ-Rock hit "It Takes Two") it features contributions from Fred Wesley and Brown himself, and is reissued as a standalone single for the first time since 1973. Her powerful and emotional cover of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" is featured as the B-side. No People Records collection would be complete without a contribution from the Godfather of Soul himself. "Escape-Ism" is 70s-era James Brown at his finest, supposedly written to kill time while he and The JBs waited for Bobby Byrd to arrive at their studio. A winding, two-part funk/soul epic, spanning both-sides of the single, the track reached #6 in the Billboard R&B charts, #25 in the pop charts, and would later be sampled by The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, and Big Daddy Kane. It's now presented here for the first time in over 30 years, in its original 7" single format. Two essential slices of top notch 70s soul from classic LP 'Hutson II' Two essential sides from one of my favourite 70s vocalists, Leroy Hutson. His album "Hutson II" has never been out DJ Fryer's DJ bag in 20 years - in fact, he's onto his third copy, having worn out the previous two from excessive use. For the A-side 'I Think I'm Falling in Love' was the obvious choice, a feel-good anthem of the highest order and weapon of choice for the climax of a good night (there is an OG of this 45 but it's very tricky to find). For the flip 'Love To Hold You Close' is a slightly more subtle feel-good boogie soul floater on 45 for the first time. It always drove DJ Fryer wild that there is a long fade on the last third of the track and no re-edit peeps have ever bothered to sort this out. Obviously at AOTN they know the score and always do things the right way, so the label went back to the masters and created a tweeked edit that can be enjoyed all the way through to the last floaty bar. Essential 70s soul. 4-track EP pressed on double 7” vinyl. Bespoke gatefold sleeve. Printed paper inner sleeves. Limited edition of 500 copies. The Vinyl Factory launches their Raft Records sublabel in collaboration with The Horrors’ / Cat’s Eyes’ Faris and Loom frontman Tarik Badwan. The first release will be a double 7” single featuring new bands Niqab, Puffer, (the mysterious) Jet Black and Skinny Girl Diet. Skinny Girl Diet: “A female Pixies with similar almost spoken word vocals but with added thrash. It is full of heartfelt angst, not caring and making light of ordinary observations. It is all about searching for something better and escaping to a fantasy that probably doesn’t exist - that is where the melancholy lies making the screams even more real.” - Benjamin Spiro-Hughes “This music is wonderful: brash, unafraid, reared and raised on my peers (Babes In Toyland, Heavens To Betsy, old school grunge).” - Everett True Puffer: “Underground industrial rockers” - Dazed & Confused “Fearless and noisy with freakish psychedelic tendencies.” - The Fly “Apocalyptic mesh of barbed riffs and howls” - NME Niqab: “Maximal psychedelic ensemble” - NME Double A-side 7” featuring artwork by Marc Donaldson. Limited edition of 500 copies. London five-piece Loom return with the release of a visceral two-track EP on Raft Records, a label run by Faris and Tarik Badwan in collaboration with The Vinyl Factory. ‘Bleed On Me’ / ‘Hate’ is the second EP release on Raft and follows the recent limited edition four track, 7” double pack showcasing new tracks by Niqab, Puffer, Jet Black and Skinny Girl Diet. First in the series is a truly left field selection, from the deeper regions of the People Records discography. Back on 45 for the first time since 1974, it's The Devils' psych-funk excursion "The X-sorcist", with a bouncy cover of Booker T & The MGs' "Hip Hug-Her" as the B-Side. No doubt inspired by the horror film The Exorcist, The Devils' track combines eerie experimental effects and ambience with blisteringly raw funk instrumentation, courtesy of People Records stars Fred Wesley on ARP synthesizer, Maceo Parker on alto sax, and production from James Brown himself James Brown's backing band The JB's kept up a prominent presence throughout the 1970s, not just as the backing band to James Brown & other People Records artists. They frequently performed on their own, or under various alternate banners, such as The Last Word, The First Family, and others. Under the name Maceo & The Macks, (led in this incarnation by Brown's saxophonist Maceo Parker) the band released the UK rare groove anthem "Cross The Track (We Better Go Back)", a powerhouse of instrumental soul funk cut that's received the hip-hop sample treatment from the likes of Kid N' Play, Doug E. Fresh, and Stetsasonic. We now present it here as a 7" single, with the shuffling funk number "Boogie 'N' Twist" on the B-Side. Outta Sight drop a diamond deuce on our asses with this sassy little 7", uniting both of Phyllis Hyman's most cherished Northen cuts on one record. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1949, Hyman enjoyed moderate success as a songwriter and actress, but she's most fondly remembered as a singer, and these two jams show us exactly why. On the A-side, "You Know How To Love Me" is the perfect post-disco soul cut, combining the rhythmic thrust of the sequined dancefloor with a soulful smoothness and the spine-tingling tonalities which mark out modern soul classics like "Love's No Longer Got A Hold On Me" and "Too Much Lovemaking". Things stay sweet, soulful and bubbling on the flipside as "Under Your Spell" shuffles and sways to the heart of the dancefloor preaching a heartwarming message of love. Truly outta sight! “So Is The Sun” by The World Column is one of those few records that stand alone, almost in a category all of its own. It’s funk, it’s soul, it’s old, it’s new, it’s northern, it’s modern – it’s all of those, and it’s a psychedelic, Sly & The Family Stone, 2 minutes and 48 seconds of wonderment. Underpinning everything is its relentless stomping beat which ultimately appealed to Northern Soul dancers at Wigan, Cleethorpes and Blackpool Mecca, and Paul Weller of The Jam – check out their “Trans Global Express”! What could possibly follow “So Is The Sun”? It must have been a puzzle for any DJ at the time, but with the benefit of hindsight, Prince George’s “Wrong Crowd” is about as good as it gets. A fabulous DPG recording from 1972. Like the Originals 45s series 5 Borough Breaks brings us hip hop classics backed with the OG funk / soul / boogie tracks used as crate-dug breakbeat sample sources. The fourth outing on the label pairs Jeru The Damaja's 1993 funky neck snapper 'Come Clean' with Funk Inc's 'Kool Is Back' lifted from their 1971 self-titled album. It's the echo-laden percussive wobble noise running through Jeru's Brooklyn bomb that's the hook on the A-side, while Funk Inc go to town on the kind of Hammond-heavy, guitar-licked funk instrumental that made their name. Beginning the musical quest in 1969, Sage stayed true to the mission of playing good R&B, funk and soul. The eight-piece band were always about the live experience and that big-full sound they like to deliver at performances. Their love of playing live seems to have left little in the way of a vinyl legacy, but about eight years ago one 45, "Alive", popped up from nowhere on the collector's scene causing a furore with its Latin horns and sunshine soul sound. A rare marmite of a record with fantastic poppy changes and driving breaks, this has to be a big festival record and with a fantastic ballad ("Song For Yvonne") on the flip, it's a winner. Well, Hello Sailor! The NYC label return for their second release, inviting São Paulo's edit masters Selvagem to bring some of their tropical genius to the picnic table. The first release sold out completely in about fifteen seconds so there's plenty of pressure on our editors here and they duly exceed all expectations. If you're ever faced with a packed dancefloor on a sweltering summer night, I suggest you turn to the A-side of this little beauty and unleash "Le Freak", a filtered, tweaked and rearranged cumbia version of the Chic classic. If you were to take one of the most uplifting and hedonistic disco records ever, merge it with all the whirlwind excitement of the Carnival then....hang on a minute, you're too late - Selvagem got there first! On the flipside, "Tamanquiero" sees the crew tackle Elizio De Buzios' holy grail of Brazilian funk, digging out the scalpel and offering a DJ friendly extension of this irresistible groove. Superb. Here's a two track limited 7” foot stomper to herald a new series of proto metal / pre-stoner rock from 60s and 70s American underground “Brown Acid”. The 7” is a limited intro to the series that kickstarts at the end of August: with Brown Acid: The First Trip. Raw Meat, for example, one of the stomping standouts from the compilation, is a band about which precious little is known even by the owner of the label and producer of the band’s original 1969 single, Richard Paul Thomas — two of its tracks reissued as a 7” teaser single for the compilation on July 31st, 2015 via RidingEasy Records. The trio was from north of Milwaukee, WI, but not much more information remains available. “They were one of the tightest trios around at the time and had a fairly large repertoire of their own material,” the label owner says (name?). “The only thing that sticks in my mind was the band’s bumper sticker ‘Raw Meat Is Good For You’. Our offices were on Lincoln Avenue just next door to the Federal Meat inspectors offices.” Lance Barresi, co-owner of L.A.-cum-Chicago shop Permanent Records has shown incredible persistence in tracking down a stellar collection of rare singles from the 60s and 70s for the 11-track compilation. Partnered with Daniel Hall of RidingEasy Records, the two have assembled a selection of songs that’s hard to believe have remained unheard for so long. Box Bedroom Rebels hit full throttle for the summer, ushering in another fresh Manchester artist after the massive Tiny Vipers dropped not more than 2 weeks ago! Troubleshooter is Rob Holloway, once of Bitsteam and with a portfolio including releases on Modern Love, Skan 1 and Touched Two. Here he displays his love of Autechre and IDM with 5 tracks that span the electronic cosmos with ease. "Analogulation" kicks things off with a LSD-induced fairytale dreamworld. Rotating, joyous elements spiraling in a world full of synthetic textures and fluffy pink clouds. "Subulation Cascader" fires up the sound mangler for an exercise in wormhole exploration. Outer-galactic bleeps and tones barraging the listener from afar while delicate, rubber-band strings hang in stasis. Excellent stuff and so idiosyncratic of the former Bitstream legend. The wonderfully named "Kickin' Binz" playfully toys with rhythmic structure as various percussion elements are fired haphazardly around the tumble drier; a beautiful if slightly serene pad sound holding everything together by the skin of its teeth. Closing side A is the first of two locked grooves included by Rob, a nice little bonus for any creative DJs to use out int field. Onto side B and "Lakeside Tardis" spins on a technicoloured penny of dreamy excellence. A skitty breakbeat accompanying kaleidoscoping arpeggios and rich plumes of bass. "Planet Alignment" is a darker number, with long analogue synth bass sweeps and an computerized, old school electro feel to proceedings. Bubbling splurges of oscillator filth joining the foray as the track progresses through its cybernetic course. Most excellent. Finally, the second locked groove bonus is a tough electro beat, perfect for mixing mid-session in the sweatiest of basem*nts. This is a f*ckin' epic EP from Box Bedroom Rebels and Troubleshooter - highly recommended. Move quick! STAFF COMMENTS Matt says: Trying to convey my excitement about this record without filling the comments box with adventurous expletives is hard. But this is stone cold genius from our former Bitstream man. Uncontrollable technoid glitch from a master of machines. If you only buy one f*cked up (oops) record this year - make sure its this one! FORMAT INFORMATION Ltd 7" Info: A brilliantly presented BBR special this time with **BLACK DIAMONDS** (!!) encased in black matt envelope, sealed with PAT test sticker. Also includes d/load card to 9 extra tracks, double-sided inner and outer sleeves (including beautiful panoramic artwork) and let's not forget the now trademark cOnFeTti! Hand numbered and limited to 250 copies. Pete Astor writes, sings songs and teaches music. He was singer songwriter in early Creation Records trailblazers The Loft, releasing two singles, Why Does the Rain and Up The Hill And Down The Slope that helped define the sound of the label and the emerging Indie genre. He subsequently formed The Weather Prophets, and launching a solo career with the albums Submarine and Zoo in the early 1990s. Continuing to perform extensively in France and mainland Europe, his next two solo albums, Paradise and God and Other Stories were on the Danceteria label. Following a two year stint as A&R manager at the publishing arm of the Beggars Group, working with acts such as Hefner, Cornershop and Republica, Astor returned to music in the late 1990s with his Ellis Island Sound and Wisdom of Harry projects, both releasing music on 7”, 12” and 10” for a variety of emerging independent labels such as Static Caravan, Wurlitzer Jukebox and Astor’s own label, Faux Lux. The Wisdom of Harry eventually signed to Matador, releasing three albums. Astor’s collaboration with David Sheppard, Ellis Island Sound, signed with Heavenly Records, also releasing a compilation of their early releases. The solo album, Songbox came out on Second Language in 2011, featuring an extra disc of cover versions of the albums’ songs by Let’s Wrestle, The Raincoats, Darren Hayman, Comet Gain, The Proper Ornaments and Mathew Sawyer, among others. 2013 saw the publication of Astor’s study of Richard Hell and the Voidoids’ Blank Generation as part of Bloomsbury’s 33 and a Third Series, along with scholarly articles with Keith Negus on songwriting practice for the Cambridge Journal of Popular Music and Ashgate books. The Arcs are Dan Auerbach, Leon Michels, Richard Swift, Homer Steinweiss, Nick Movshon, Kenny Vaughan, and Mariachi Flor de Toloache. In advance of their debut album, Yours, Dreamily, which will be released on September 4 on Nonesuch Records, they release a limited edition 7-inch single, available only at independent retail outlets. Inspired by the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao boxing match in May 2015, the single includes the songs ‘Stay in My Corner’ and non-album track ‘Tomato Can’. ‘Outta My Mind’, a second 7-inch single, will follow in July. The Arcs will be touring in support of the album; details will be announced soon. The Arcs collaboratively wrote and recorded 13 tracks for the forthcoming album Yours, Dreamily, with the musicians playing a large array of roles both vocally and instrumentally. Co-produced by Auerbach and Michels, the album was recorded in roughly two weeks through spontaneous, informal sessions across the country at the Sound Factory in Los Angeles, the Diamond Mine in Queens, Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, and in a lounge room at Electric Lady in Manhattan. Tchad Blake mixed the album on his horse farm in Wales. The Arcs are Dan Auerbach, Leon Michels, Richard Swift, Homer Steinweiss, Nick Movshon, Kenny Vaughan, and Mariachi Flor de Toloache. In 2014, Sheer Mag seemingly came out of nowhere with what was probably our favourite release of the year, debuting, straight to vinyl, their brand of hard rock-inspired power pop perfection. This time around, expectations are unreasonably high, but guess what? Sheer Mag don't care! Out from under this table, these Philly miscreants return stronger than ever, this time toning down (ever so slightly) the power pop undertones that got them comparisons to the Shivvers (female vocals?) and putting the rock in the forefront. Still, the band could pass as the Jackson 5 re-imagined as a punk trash compactor and this record stands tall as what will definitely be the hard rock record of the year. The fourth release of Dusty Donuts crew celebrates the 10th anniversary of the cult breakers' hit "The Antique Anthem", now released for the first time on 7". On the flipside comes a brand new B-boy / B-girl banger “Make Your Move”. Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop are the unique combination of a highly skilledDJ / turntablist and a classically trained pianist. The two-times German champion of the International Federation turntablist Marc Hype has worked with his hip hop partner in crime, the concert pianist Jim Dunloop, since 2004. They have collaborated on numerous releases on international labels and released an album on the legendary MPM Records. Johnny Marr has enjoyed a rapturous start to his solo career following the critical acclaim (including the honour of being named as NME’s Godlike Genius) greeted to his Top 10 solo albums ‘The Messenger’ and ‘Playland’. Meanwhile his live shows have been celebrated for his ability to combine the best of his new material with select highlights from The Smiths plus others from his extensive back catalogue. ‘Candidate’ will be available on digital and 7” vinyl formats, both of which feature the brand new b-side ‘Exit Connection’. Following the late 2014 online only single, ’Shimensoka', Thalassocracy return with their debut 7”, helmed by the urgency of intoxicatingly immediate A-side ‘Graves’. The band is now established with a full time cast of Playlounge songsmith Saam Watkins on drums, Slothboat kingpin Lloyd King on bass, and, often found toiling over independent releases via Art Is Hard Records, Richard Walsh takes on vocal & guitar responsibilities. Fusing obvious and not so obvious influences from a smorgasbord of crunch-punch contemporaries, 'Graves’ showcases hooks-a-plenty without a chorus in sight. Clocking in at less than 2 minutes on the stereo, Walsh says of the track; “Graves is the subject of unfaltering euphoria, when even a fleeting moment can carry an illusioned, weighted sum of joy. It’s a happy sad song, rather than a sad happy song so pls sing along." ‘Nothing Left To Talk About’ is the brand new single by Saint Etienne’s lead singer Sarah Cracknell, a duet with guest vocalist Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers. The song is taken from 'Red Kite', Sarah’s much-anticipated new solo album (out the same day). Musically, the song has a sophisticated feel, drawing on classic 60s pop with less of a dance music influence than Saint Etienne. Another essential OG 45 for your hip hop or jazz-dance box. '40 Days' is lifted from jazz trumpeter Billy Brooks sought after solo LP, “Windows Of The Mind” released on the Crossover label in 1974. With its funky drum breaks and sharp horns the track has a cinematic feel, as well as being a perfect early doors jazz-dance shuffler. A Tribe Called Quest obviously thought the same thing, transforming the shuffle'n'horns into a looped up hip hop break for “Luck Of Lucien”, lifted from their 1990 Native Tongues jazzy 'People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm' album. Primo-Power Pop 7”" Single On Burger Records featuring Brian Bell Of Weezer!!! The Relationship is pretty much the indie band version of a buddy comedy. Weezer guitarist Brian Bell fronts the four-piece, which includes Nate Shaw of U.S. Bombs, Albert Hammond Jr.'s songwriting partner Jon LaRue, and Anthony Burulcich, drummer for Morrissey and the Bravery. With every passing decade since Kaleidoscope's demise, the band’s recorded legacy has continued to rank amongst the most highly prized artefacts that define the psychedelic genre. Their seminal debut album from 1967, `Tangerine Dream` is now considered to be one of the finest examples of English psychedelia with original copies of this album fetching in excess of £1000. Similarly 1969’s heavier edged follow-up ‘Faintly Blowing’ and 1970’s ‘From Home to Home’ are also fetching hefty sums. The two tracks on this 7" are unreleased alternative mixes from the band`s own personal archives that have laid unheard for over 45 years – that is until now! Discovered only recently in in a dusty corner of lead singer Peter Daltrey's attic (along with some original stage costumes) Peter explains how he acquired these now priceless artefacts: "After a long day-and-into-the-night recording at the Philips/Fontana Studio No 1 at Marble Arch, the band would request acetates of the day`s work to listen to at home. Dick Leahy (Philips/ Fontana 60's A&R Legend) was always involved in the arrangements and instrumentation of each track in consultation with us. So at the end of the session, the engineer would dub down a mix of the track for us and then overnight we would go away and listen to the arrangements which (although almost always in mono) still gave us a fair idea of what the finished track would sound like. At the next session we would then pow-wow in the control room with a chain smoking Dick and come to an agreement on changes for overdub embellishments that might be required. Thus these acetates were an invaluable tool in helping us hone and craft each track and refine the Kaleidoscope Sound!" Both tracks collected here:`Black Fjord` and `If You So Wish`, have been taken from the band`s widely lauded second album: 'Faintly Blowing' and feature the first 'new' material that has surfaced from the band in close on 25yrs. The version of `Black Fjord`features a band in the full throws of sonic experimentation with the vocals heavily drenched in reverb giving the impression of a band recording in some gigantic cathedral-like echo chamber!! Whilst the version of `If You So wish`sees lead singer Peter Daltrey providing a tentative guide vocal during an orchestral session which provides a wonderful insight into the development of the track, although obviously not originally intended for commercial release. Fine attention has also been paid to the packaging which comes as a 7" foldout sleeve which reproduces the original artwork from the inner and outer gatefold album sleeve. Limited to just 499 copies it also comes hand numbered and pressed on beautiful coloured vinyl, housed and protected by a PVC sleeve. FORMAT INFORMATION Ltd 7" Info: DOUBLE SIDED 7" FOLD-OUT SLEEVE – BLUE VINYL Athens Of The North keep up their relentless schedule of essential reissues with this storming release which puts two deep disco classics on 45 for the first time ever. Not only are these two blinders personal favourites of label head DJ Fryer, but also Theo Parrish who extended and upended both tracks way back when for his Ugly Edit series. GQ stood for Good Quality, and those guys weren't messing around, notching up a fair few top ten hits and a wealth of underground dancefloor bangers throughout their 70s output. From the word go, "Lies" has you hooked, boasting an irresistible bassline, scratchy guitars and hot horns, which soon lead into the melancholic organ line and lovelorn vocals. On the flip, "Is It Cool" rocks another dope bassline alongside rhythmic soulful piano and rising horns, keeping things deep and tense through the verses before bursting into life at the chorus. This release, featuring a perfect new master from Sony, cut loud and lively at the Timmion lab in Finland sees the two classics sounding better than ever. Get ready to get down! STAFF COMMENTS David says: As featured on Theo Parrish's Ugly Edit series (number 7 fact fans). This. Is. A. Bomb. I'm gonna have to come out and say it, I'm a size queen. If you head to my casa, you'll see rack after rack of 12"s and LPs but only a small stack of 7"s tucked away in the corner. The smaller format's just too hard to work with in the heat of the night, and let's face it, 7 inches rarely pack enough of a punch. Well, ladies and gents, let me introduce you to the little record that can! Pontchartrain follows up a couple of essential edits on Whiskey Disco with a fearsome edit of the Reverend and his classic "Love & Happiness". Tougher than Mr. T, this bruising edit works the loops to perfection over a stomping kick and growling bassline, while Pontchartrain shows a deft touch, breezing through his fx desk to freak out the vocals and instrumentation in an arrangement that never gets tired. Flip the disc and prepare to get deep and soulful with Pontchartrain's hosued up refix of Latimore's "Straighten It Out". Letting the track build up from percussion groove and the filtered bassline, P-diggy adds vocal snippets and organ licks until we hit the first peak and things bottom out into a fierce house bump topped with Latimore's raw vocals. Super tough, hard rocking edits from the Rocksteady Disco. Taking their name from the late, great drummer & vocalist Levon Helm, The Levons are a four-piece from Liverpool who have immersed themselves in classic melodies, vintage harmonies & pounding backbeats. With songwriting and lead vocal duties alternating between Nathaniel Cummings & Danny Murphy, the dynamic of the band is refreshingly competitive yet complementary. For their debut physical release, the band have self-produced a double A-side single that highlights this dichotomy. "Come & Get It", sung by Nathaniel, is sultry and brooding, swaggering hypnotically towards an incendiary backwards guitar solo. The flip side "When You're Not Around" is a slice of upbeat blue-eyed soul with a stomping rhythm section and soaring harmonies providing a foundation for Danny's uplifting lead vocal. The first release on River Cool Records, the limited edition vinyl single features a picture sleeve by San Franciscan artist Nina Pratchios and all copies come with a free digital download including exclusive bonus track "Where Did You Go". All proceeds will go to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2015 EXCLUSIVE, LIMITED TO ONE PER PERSON. David Bowie has been a major figure in the world of popular music for over four decades, and is renowned as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. He is known for his distinctive voice as well as the intellectual depth and eclecticism of his work. Famed for his trailblazing work as the singer and guitarist for the seminal New York punk band Television, Tom Verlaine also carved out an acclaimed and eclectic solo career. He was trained as a classical pianist but gravitated toward rock music after an encounter with the Rolling Stones “19th Nervous Breakdown.” (via AllMusic) Part of Rhino’s now-celebrated Side By Side 7” singles series. Born out of frustration and by accident, it quickly found its feet as an aggressive attack on all that is contrived and connected to the day-to-day hammer of low paid employment. After a year in the studio and gigs around Nottingham, Jason then took the cause to London for a period and eventually back to Nottingham in 2009 where he met Andrew Fearn, who became nvolved with the production of the 5th album, Wank. He also became the second member. On Wank's release, Jason and Andrew were offered a slot on the bill of The Rammel Club's 3 day festival which introduced Jason to the Noise scene, so to speak, and also to Steve Underwood from the punk label, Harbinger Sound. A year later Harbinger Sound released Sleaford Mods first vinyl album, Austerity Dogs, and it immediately took off with a string of gigs in Europe and major cities in the UK along with side articles in leading music magazines The Wire, Fact and Vice as well as countless fanzines. The second album from Harbinger sound is due to be released later this year and also two 7" releases from Fourth Dimension Records and Kraak's home label are due in the meantime. Tours to promote these are currently underway with more planned. ‘Mr. Jolly f*cker’ b/w ‘Tweet Tweet Tweet’ sees the duo continuing their sometimes raucous yet always edgy melding of mean hip-hop beats, often savage poetic observations (think whizzed-out Mark E, Smith) and snarling punk attitude. A full-on kick to the senses inspired by the Sex Pistols, The Last Poets and ‘60s garage and soul music. Weed formed in 2010 when Will Anderson and Kevin Doherty reconvened on a clothing-optional beach in Vancouver. A couple of weekend trips to Washington were made, a 7” single was cut, a couple of screwballs tightened up. In 2011 they played a benefit for the UBC campus radio station, where Hugo Noriega provided the band with doughnuts. He was quickly recruited and the three have been together ever since. They have aggravated one million drummers in the meantime. In September 2013 the band released an album of sentimental dream-grunge called ‘Deserve’ on Seattle’s Couple Skate Records and started doing laps around the continent, silencing the critics (literally, in some cases) and stirring up a loyal fanbase lovingly referred to as the Field Trippers. Weed’s latest 7”, via Lefse Records, is a continuation of the blown out pop-slop seen on ‘Deserve’, containing two songs: ‘Thousand Pounds’, the first single from their upcoming sophom*ore effort ‘Running Back’; plus a gloomy, droney, previously unheard cut from their first ever recording sessions called ‘Turret’. From an unassuming, self-sufficient musical micro-industry in the north of England comes more finely tuned fastidious femme pop from Jane Weaver and her growing Bird Records imprint with a new split single. Having garnered unanimous acclaim amongst critics, bloggers, radio programmers, likeminded artists, gig promoters and record shops alike, Jane’s 'The Silver Globe' LP has managed to top multiple end of year charts in 2014 and is still commanding the attention of new found fans on a daily basis - a feat deemed almost impossible for an artist with five previous albums to her name and a fervent loyalty to the independent anti corporation she has cohabited for the last 20 years. With this mindset (plus good taste and talent) blooms independent pop music as it should be - adventurous, free, visionary and exciting - 'Don’t Take My Soul' the Liverpudlian-born Manc dweller has achieved just that. Combining domestic synth pop with falsetto melodics and 10cc sounding prog pop arrangements Jane depicts a theatrical electronic pop character that fuses Kate Bush karaoke with a J-Pop Erykah Badu whilst retaining her own very distinctive songwriting, conjuring images of neon arcade machines and shabby 1980′s Euro roller rinks. An absolute favourite on our Piccadilly Records coveted Album Of The Year, 'Don’t Take My Soul' features extra production duties from Andy Votel and ends with a guitar solo from Badly Drawn Boy which sounds like a cryogenic experiment from his pre-'Bewilderbeast' days. True to her co-op mentality Jane’s first vinyl single from the LP (following a limited cassette single of the Dave Brock co-write 'Electric Mountain') shares vinyl sides with label mate Tender Prey (aka Laura Bryon) who brings her inimitable drummy saccharine tinged pow-wow punk to the fray with the effortless 'Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Of My Heart' ripped from the forthcoming 'Organ Calzone' cassette and download long player released later this year. Based in Cardiff with countless road miles shared on tour with H.Hawkline and Cate Le Bon (another Bird school alumni), Laura has stolen the hearts of unknowing live converts via support slots and Marc Riley endorsed radio sessions motivated by her own self-propelled god speed. Liverpool legend Michael Head (Shack, The Strands, Pale Fountains) returns with a stunningly beautiful double A-side single. "Velvets In The Dark" is a gorgeous conversational swooner in the style of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking", whilst the flip, "Koala Bears" has an almost jazzy flavour and slips into (Bacharach and David's) "Close To You" as made famous by The Carpenters! Strange, inspired magic from a bygone time, these two tracks perfectly complement one another: two evocative little stories done justice by the prettiest finger-picking, warmest horns and the classiest of arrangements. All in all, a little gem. STAFF COMMENTS Andy says: A superb, stand alone double A-side from the Liverpudlian genius. It's a modern day classic, a thing of wonderment! His last ep sold out really quickly, so.... Horsebeach are back with a neu groove for the new year and it's Rother good if you ask me. The Mancunian dreamers return to their beloved 7" format with two fresh cuts which push the breezy jangle of their sublime debut LP into uncharted sonic territory. A-side track "Disappear" sees the group drinking in the cosmic vintage of Düsseldorf '72, as their chiming West Coast guitars are joined by celestial keys, head nodding bass grooves and a motorik rhythm. The hazy echo on Kennedy's relaxed vocals puts the track in soft focus from the off, before the whole thing tessellates with kaleidoscopic majesty into the warm psychedelia of a kosmische freak out. Over on "Let You Down", we find Kennedy in sombre mood and baritone voice, crooning regretful over melancholy chords and a baggy backbeat. Before we find ourselves lost in the dark completely, the weather breaks with a burst of warm organ, staccato Thai guitar and humid funk. This is the work of a confident band buoyed by the success of their debut LP. Horsebeach are keen to explore new directions and boast the maturity and songwriting to back it up. Watch this space. STAFF COMMENTS Andy says: Two brand new and excellent tracks from Piccadilly favourites Horsebeach. A smart step on from last year's debut album. Manchester’s Cavan Moran releases a brand new single 'Lonely Rival' on 7” vinyl, via his own label, C33 Records. The follow-up to 2013's 'Five Simple Crimes' EP is Moran’s first vinyl release and paves the way for his debut album, which will be released via the French vinyl-only label, Celebration Days Records in the autumn of 2015. Moran has already graced some of the world’s finest stages, including London’s Union Chapel, New York’s Knitting Factory and La Flèche D'Or in Paris and the songs are built to fill such stunning spaces. Lonely Rival appears to deal with the fear of writer’s block, the dreaded curse of any songwriter. Crisp guitar and mournful harmonica introduce Moran’s rich vocal, before Emma Whitworth’s pretty piano line and a gentle drum beat embellish the arrangement. Hanami’s John Wilson adds understated lead guitar, as the song drifts to its mellow conclusion. On the flip side is the sublime 'Pricked To A Pattern'. The piano is again prominent but this time joined by accordion and banjo, giving it a more traditional folk flavour. Whitworth’s backing vocals, although subtle, meld with Moran, in perfect harmony. Writer’s block seems light years away. After their first year in business Athens Of The North is happy to open the door on our new sub-label for everything wiith a funky edge, AOE aka Owl Of Athens). For the label's first AOE outing they drop the two strongest tracks from Beginning Of The End's rare self-titled LP "Superwoman" a next-level funk anthem of the highest order. Flipped with the almost afro-beat style guitar of "That's What I Get". Both are solid classics from back in the day yet never issued before on single, what better way to start a new label. Both songs were written by Alessandro "Teddy" Randazzo a New York City born pop songwriter who composed hit songs such as "Goin' Out of My Head", "It's Gonna Take a Miracle", "Pretty Blue Eyes", and "Hurt So Bad" in the 1960s, Teddy wrote many hit records for Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Manhattans, The Stylistics, Linda Ronstadt. He also wrote "Super Woman" for the The Dells. After signing with Don Taylor Raphaeland the Beginning of the End were introduced to Teddy Randazzo and Vicky Pike, they loved five of the duos songs "Jamaica", "Falling Apart at the Seams", "Superwoman", "That's What I Get" and "Blues Train" which they took recorded their second album in Jamaica and New York. Many of Randazzo's tunes became pop classics, recorded by a gamut of industry giants from Ella Fitzgerald to Frank Sinatra. These two slices of funky soul may not have fared so well but not for lack of quality or delivery, lets change that. Speedy Wunderground release their ninth single, ‘Guts’ by Kate Tempest & Loyle Carner. The single is available as a limited edition 7” and features ‘Guts (Mr Dan’s Balloon Dub)’ on the B-side. Pierre (Hall) from the label, discovered Loyle, a 20-year-old MC from London whilst trawling the internet and coming across his track ‘Cantona’ based on the passing away of his dad. ‘I fell in love with it immediately’ explained Pierre, ‘something about the sincerity of the lyrics, it felt authentic, but raw and exposed too. I could relate to it. I knew nothing about him but sent it to Dan and Alexis straight away simply saying we had to work with him’ The label invited Loyle down to the Heavenly Social for the launch night of their label compilation ‘Speedy Wunderground – Year 1’ where he met Dan and recently Mercury Prize nominated Kate Tempest who was performing that night and was awestruck. ‘When Dan suggested working together with Kate on something - it was like a dream come true,’ says Loyle, ‘that day in the studio with them both is something I’ll never forget’. The resulting ‘Guts’, was conceived when Dan invited Kate and Loyle in for a session together, and the two displayed equal admiration for each other in the studio. ‘It showcases both of their talents perfectly; it’s a call-to-arms. A statement.’ Loyle, a fast rising star from South London, who recently released his ‘A Little Late’ EP to universal praise was also recently commissioned by the Tate Collective to produce a track, ‘Baby Grey’, to accompany an artwork by Tris Vonna-Michell. Following ‘Speedy Wunderground – Year 1’ a compilation of their first 12 months of 7” releases, and a slight hiatus during which label head –honcho produced and toured with mercury nominated Kate Tempest, the label release their ninth single, ‘Dangerous When Wet’ by Natalie Bang Bang. Signed to Island Records and having previously released music through LuvLuvLuv and New Slang Records, Natalie Bang Bang is 25-year-old musician Natalie Chahal. Of Indian heritage, she was born in Feltham and is now based in East London. Growing up idiolising Patti Smith, Bikini Kill, Talking Heads, Madonna and Velvet Underground, she spent her teens touring the UK playing in punk bands. After her band mates left to go to university, Natalie moved to Brighton where she continued to write and play in bands and later moved back to London to begin producing her own solo music inspired by Riot Grrrl, 60s girl groups, mean girls and beach boys. On working with Dan Carey, Natalie said: “When I read up about Speedy, I knew that Dan's process was gonna be fun for me because that's the way I like to work. Capture the magic, don't over complicate it. Dan and I had never worked together before this session. In fact we weren't even thinking of it as a Speedy session, we were just gonna have a jam. “ “We were looking around his studio at cool pedals and equipment to mess around with. Dan showed me a reel-to-reel tape player and I had always wanted to use one. I enjoyed the idea of creating something that sounded like it was from the future and the past at the same time.” “We ended up jamming for an hour, it was just really fun and free. We then listened back to the session and found this moment of magic. It wasn't perfect, it was a little shaky, there were better takes, but it was that moment where you could really hear it just fall into place; we both recognised that.” As ever, the requisite Speedy Wunderground tenets were firmly in place – recorded in a day at Dan’s South London HQ in a dry ice and lazer filled studio, mixed the following day and quickly pressed on limited (250 only) vinyl.
