There are cases when 6-8 treatments are enough to zap 70-90% of hair follicles for good. But, that's the exception not the rule. It is more common to need 10 or 12 treatments and in some cases even 15 treatments to reach optimal results. Optimal results with laser hair removal is always 70-90% permanent hair reduction.

Hair growth: IPL is most effective on coarse, thick hair. People with fine, light hair may not see as good results with IPL. Expectations: IPL offers permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal, as it rarely removes 100% of the hair.

IPL treatments, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Aesthetic Dermatology, show that people get 83.3% less hair growth after one month and 78.1% less after three months. Results can last for years or even permanently.

After IPL hair removal

Any hair that does not fall out was either too fine, too light, too deeply rooted or possibly wasn't treated. After the hair falls out you should have a hair free period for approximately 3 to 6 weeks.

The hair will grow back over a long period of time – so it's not 100% permanent, but the expensive, long-lasting hair removal treatment offers almost-permanent hair removal after a series of repeat visits.

That might have left you asking yourself, “Can I use IPL for pubic hair?” You sure can, but there are a few important steps to take to ensure you get the best results. Trim existing hair: First, shave, epilate, or wax your intimate area.

Using IPL too often can be ineffective and painful. IPL is most effective while your hair is in the growth phase –if you treat your skin multiple times a week, your hair can become dormant and IPL treatment won't work as well.

Unfortunately, IPL doesn't work for everyone. IPL technology requires contrast between hair and skin to work its magic since it targets pigment in the hair follicle.

You will notice that the hair growth after four weeks of IPL treatment will be lesser and thinner. After completing a session of 12 weeks, the hair growth will reduce completely, providing you with silky, smooth skin for a longer time. However, you may have to continue touch-ups as needed.

To maximise your success rate, don't fake tan for four weeks before treatment as the lighter the skin, the easier it is to target the hair. The energy from the laser will be absorbed into tanned skin rather than the follicle and burning or discoloration may occur.

Will IPL eventually stop hair growth? ›

Depending on your skin color and hair type, you might need up to 12 weeks of single weekly treatment with IPL to get complete results. You will typically notice more sparse and slower hair growth within the first month with a permanent reduction in hair growth within the three months.

While IPL hair reduction doesn't get rid of every follicle of hair on your body at the same time, it can progressively deliver1 year of visible hair reduction. As hair grows in stages, not all follicles will be 'full' with hair when you undergo an IPL treatment.

In short, no. Laser hair removal works by heating the hair follicles to stop new hairs from growing. This puts the hair follicles in a state of dormancy for a long period of time — much longer than with shaving and waxing.

2) IPL hair removal isn't permanent

As hair grows in stages, not all follicles will be 'full' with hair when you undergo an IPL treatment. Since only hairs in their growing phase are susceptible to treatment with light, it is important to do multiple IPL treatments to achieve long-lasting, continuously smooth skin.
