The most frequently asked question from our readers is, "Can you freeze Rice Krispie treats?"

Happily, the answer is "yes!"

Admittedly, nothing tastes quite as delicious as a freshly made homemade Rice Krispie Treat, especially those made using our award-winning recipe.

When you eat cereal treats the day they are made, they are perfectly crispy and delicately chewy. If stored properly they stay fresh for days at room temperature and for months in the freezer.

How many days will Rice Krispie Treats stay fresh?

Well, that will depend on the type of butter used in the recipe, the temperature in your house, and the type of container used for storage.

Some say your treats will only stay fresh at room temperature for 2 days. We have found that Rice Krispie Treats can remain fresh for up to 5 if you make the treats with unsalted butter and up to 7 days if you use salted butter. Salt is a natural preservative!

If you store your treats in a zip-top bag set on the counter, they will only stay fresh for 2-3 days, but if you store them in an airtight container with a tight-fitting lid, they will stay fresh for 5-7 days.

If your house is cool, around 72 degrees F, the treats will stay fresher longer than those stored in a hotter house.

How to store Rice Krispie treats at room temperature?

Place your treats in a single layer (or double layer with wax paper in between) in an airtight container (with a good seal). Set it on the counter away from any heat source or direct sunlight.

Can you refrigerate Rice Krispie treats?

NO! DO NOT REFRIGERATE Rice Krispie treats. Treats can pick up odors from inside the fridge. Plus, they can taste stale if stored in the fridge. It's better to freeze them.

How to freeze Rice Krispie treats?

Allow your treats to cool completely! Then, place them in a zip-top bag in a single layer. Remove as much air as possible from the bag. I like to seal the bag leaving an inch open on one end. I place a straw into the opening and suck as much air out of the bag as possible through the straw. Then, I quickly pull out the straw as I seal up the bag.

It may be hard to see it in the picture above, but the Ziploc bag has all the air removed and is sealed tightly against the cereal treats. Removing all the air will help to keep the treats fresh while stored in the freezer.

One of the nice things about freezing Rice Krispie treats in a Ziploc bag is being able to easily write the date you placed the treats in the freezer. You can also write the best-by date which will be 3 months after the date you froze them.

Can you freeze Rice Krispie treats in an airtight container?

Yes. Wrap the Rice Krispie treats in wax paper or parchment paper, tape the seams closed, place in an airtight container, seal the container shut, then place in the freezer.

There is no need to individually wrap each cereal treat unless you plan to remove them one at a time from the freezer.

If you don't wrap the treats, ice crystals may form inside the container which can affect the texture of your treats when thawed.

Can you freeze Rice Krispie treats in tin foil?

Yes, but be sure to use two layers of tin foil to ensure your treats are not exposed to air or odors.

Wrap your marshmallow crispy treats really well in one layer of foil. Then, turn the wrapped treats over so the seam side is down and lay it on another layer of foil. Wrap the foil around the treats. Press the aluminum foil tightly against the treats. Make sure there are no gaps around the edges that will let air in.

Can you freeze cereal treats in plastic wrap?

We do not recommend only using plastic wrap. Plastic wrap doesn't seal well enough to keep air out or to keep ice crystals from forming especially once it is frozen.

If you only have plastic wrap, wrap the treats in several layers, making sure there are no gaps that will allow air in. Only store in the freezer for one month.

Can you freeze crispy treats in Glad Press'n Seal?

Yes. We recommend using two layers of this sticky wrapping to ensure no air gets into your package of treats.

Wrap the treats in one layer, the set that with the seam side down on another sheet of Press'n Seal. Wrap it up with the second layer.

How long can you freeze Rice Krispie treats?

We recommend freezing your treats for up to 3 months. They may keep longer, up to 6 months, but they will taste freshest if they are not frozen for too long.

How to thaw frozen rice crispy treats?

Remove the treats from the freezer, and set them on the counter without removing them from the bag, container, foil, or Press'n Seal. Let them thaw for at least 30 minutes or up to an hour before removing them from the packaging.

This process will ensure the treats won't develop beads of condensation on top.

If you plan to eat individual treats or just a few at a time, it might be better to package them in smaller zip-top bags.

Can you eat a frozen cereal treat?

Yes, once it is thawed!

Frozen Rice Krispie treats are too hard to eat. They could damage a tooth or the roof of your mouth. Be patient and wait until they have thawed. It won't take too long.

Can you freeze Rice Krispie treats dipped in chocolate?

How to freeze chocolate-dipped Rice Krispie Treats?

Wrap individual chocolate-coated treats in wax paper. Place them in an airtight container. Set a layer of paper towels in the container and seal the lid tightly. Freeze.

To thaw, remove the container from the freezer and set it on the counter for at least 1 hour before removing the treats. This will keep your treats from getting too wet and sticky.

Condensation (beads of water) will form on the cold treats when they hit room temperature air. Keeping them in the package helps eliminate this problem. The paper towel will also wick up any excess moisture.
