Sour cream, a fat-rich dairy product made from fermented cream, is a primary ingredient for a varietyof appetizers, the most prominent being French onion, cucumber, dill, artichoke, and spinach dips. At home, it also is mixed with salsa and similar products to make ethnic dips. Regardless of how it isused, sour cream is a dairy product. As such, dips that include it are subject the same general guidelinesfor handling and storage as many other dairy products, including milk and cream.
