What Are Bottleneck Bangs?

So, you want to try bangs, but aren’t ready to take the full plunge yet? This is where bottleneck bangs come into play–the more subtle version of curtain bangs.

Bottleneck bangs are the perfect transition step when testing out fringe. The bangs are parted down the middle and start at the center of your forehead, right around eyebrow length. The fringe cascades down, gradually tapering to a longer length that hits around your cheekbone. Essentially, bottleneck bangs earned their name by starting skinnier at the top and becoming wider at the bottom.

How to Ask for This Style

London-based hairstylist, Tom Smith, coined the term bottleneck bangs after seeing this trend across magazine covers. “Ask your hairstylist to create longer bangs that skim your cheekbones at an angle that flatters your face, while curving around to create a layer that sits between your cheekbone and jaw. Then, ask for the center part to be cut shorter, keeping it soft and choppy. The shortest part should be in the middle, getting longer on the edges,” explains Smith.

Bottleneck bangs are flattering on so many people and can be done on a wide variety of hair types. Plus, we love how these bangs can also be paired with almost any hair length. Whether you’re sporting a lob or strands down to your waist, bottleneck bangs are a great addition to your look that helps add interest and movement.

How to Style Bottleneck Bangs

When it comes to styling this type of fringe you truly have so many options. However, before you get into the fun part, Smith recommends starting with a good blow-dry. “They should be treated as a full bang when initially blow-drying. Wrap dry the bang side to side, focusing on drying the roots forward, which will give you control if the bang begins to open or part. After this, the longer length can be styled as desired,” shares Smith.

This is where you can get a little more creative with your look, opting for a number of a curling iron or flat iron techniques to style the longer length. “I love using a straightening iron to bend them in a very customizable way. They can also be blow-dried with a round brush, or styled with a large curling iron for a flicked-out result, sweeping away from the face,” explains Smith.
