A message of reflection on Remembrance Day - Government House Western Australia (1)

By Amelia O'Sullivan

Like many Australians, I have personal connections to this national day of remembering, with members of my family having landed on the shores of ANZAC Cove on 25 April 1915.

This day, the 11th of November, holds a special significance in our hearts. We remember not only those who fell in the Great War, but all of the brave men and women who have given their lives for the freedoms that we have today.

Remembrance Day is for us to remember and memorialise those who sacrificed their lives – this is not to the glorification of war.

This is a time for us to be reflective and to be thankful for the peace and liberty that we now enjoy. We want it to remain so, especially with many wars taking place in the world today.

If our ANZAC legacy is that we don’t have war visit Australian shores again – that would certainly be an enduring legacy.
