A guy's guide to being proper for prom (1)

Besides having the right look, prom date, and a nice tux, what else is there to do for a young man on prom night?

Plenty...

It may be less work and half the hassle than what females go through, but prom is just as important to us as it is to the ladies.

The most important aspect to looking crisp, is the look. Make sure you get your braids or corn rows tight, get a fresh fade , or just trim a little of the top depending on how you want to look. Being hygienic is a must. This means clean your ears, so that the your date will be whispering sweet nothings to you all night. Shave or trim any or all facial hair so that your face could feel as smooth as a baby's bottom. Gel up your hair if you must, brush those pearly whites and rub some lotion on your skin. Hey, remember that nice bottle of cologne your grandma gave you for Christmas? Use it ... smelling good during prom is key to having a successful night.

Next is the tux, and that's simple. Guys, you all know that we're not picky. Black tux, white shirt, vest and a tie. If you choose to be daring with your vest and tie, colors such as maroon, sky blue, or even -- dare I say it -- pink, are fine as long as your knowledge on fashion is high. If you're going to wear a different colored tux, please make sure you wear it right. You don't want to look foolish like Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in "Dumb and Dumber." No matter what you wear, just make sure you're comfortable and feel good.

If you have a date, READ THIS PARAGRAPH; if not, move on to the next one. Remember that you and your date must match because if you don't, you'll both look foolish. A corsage? Memorize it and don't forget it. You're going to need one of those for your date and yes, they are that important. Also don't forget that the corsage must match your date's dress -- everything is about matching.

Limousines and expensive rides are always important. Whether it's any limo, a stretch Navigator or a helicopter (for those working in a higher income bracket), just remember to make room for everybody who's coming with you. And keep this little secret between us: if you're going to drink (and I'm not saying it's OK -- I'm just being realistic), make sure that you don't drive.

So this is it, your night has arrived. Keep chivalry alive and make sure you're polite to your prom date. Dance because the girls love guys who dance. Just in case you're going to sweat like an over-weight person at an all you can eat buffet line, bring a handkerchief. And don't be a wallflower on one of the most important evenings in your teenage life -- live it up, have fun and be safe.
